Beach Blossom – a Tropical Rum Cocktail for Summer

img_2410c-3314030

Yesterday was a pretty big day – we welcomed our daughter Avery into the world! Last month I created this recipe as a tribute to our new baby girl and to all the joys summertime brings.

I’m taking a bit of a maternity leave, but I’ll still be popping in here occasionally to share some new summer cocktail recipes like this tropical Beach Blossom.

The Beach Blossom is a sweet and tart, fruity, and slightly floral cocktail made with white rum, coconut, guava, pineapple, citrus, and a touch of orange flower water.

If you enjoy Pina Coladas or other classic tropical summer cocktails, give this pink drink a try!

What’s in the Beach Blossom cocktail:

  • 2 oz white rum
  • 1 ½ oz lemon juice
  • ¾ oz cream of coconut
  • ½ oz guava syrup
  • ½ oz pineapple juice
  • 2 dashes orange flower water

Pineapple juice: Go with an unsweetened juice if using canned or bottled. If possible, freshly press and strain your own.

One way to do this is to toss some fresh pineapple in a blender, puree it, and then strain the pulp through a fine mesh strainer.

Just like freshly squeezed citrus juices, fresh pineapple juice tastes infinitely better than bottled.

Cream of coconut: Cream of coconut is a sweetened coconut cream that’s easy to find at grocery stores. Look for it in a can in the cocktail mixers section.

A popular brand is called Coco Lopez. You can also make your own, if you prefer. Here’s a recipe for DIY cream of coconut.

Where can I find orange flower water?

Orange flower water is a traditional ingredient in Middle Eastern and Mediterranean cuisine. You can often find it in the spice section at the grocery store, in specialty or gourmet shops, or on Amazon.

Where can I find guava syrup?

You can make your own, if you like, but I used Monin’s Guava Syrup, which you can also find on Amazon. It gives cocktails a stunning pink color and it has a potent, authentic guava flavor.

How to make the Beach Blossom

This is a simple shaken cocktail. All you have to do is to add all of the ingredients to a cocktail shaker, fill the shaker ¾ with ice, and shake until chilled.

Once the shaker is nice and frosty, strain the cocktail into a glass filled with ice and garnish with tropical flair! I garnished mine with pineapple fronds and a pink crabapple blossom from a tree in my backyard.
