Saffron Honey Rum Old Fashioned

a variation on the classic Old Fashioned cocktail with aged rum, a saffron honey syrup, and orange bitters.

  • 2 oz aged rum I used Kirk & Sweeney 23
  • 1/4 oz saffron honey syrup
  • 2 dashes orange bitters


  • Add all ingredients to a cocktail shaker and fill 3/4 with ice.
  • Shake until chilled, about 12 seconds. Strain into a rocks glass filled with ice, or over one large cube. Garnish with an expressed orange twist.


To make the Saffron Honey Syrup, combine 1/2 honey and 1/2 cup of water. Stir until all of the honey dissolves, then add a small pinch of saffron threads (5-10). Let the saffron steep in the syrup for at least a few hours, then remove the threads. Store in a covered container in the refrigerator.
