The end of October signals the beginning of the busiest time of the year! From Halloween through New Year’s, there’s one occasion after another to eat, drink, and be merry. As they say, it’s the “most wonderful time of the year”, but it can also be pretty stressful and exhausting. Sometimes at the end of the day, I just want to curl up with a warm, cozy, alcohol-free nightcap. I want something calming and soothing to help lull me to sleep, and for me that’s moon milk!
Moon milk is a quick and easy home remedy that helps with you unwind and get to sleep after a long day. It’s typically just warmed milk with a few add-ins for flavor or to aid with relaxation. This version is made with River’s Rhapsody Chocolate Elixir from Mountain Rose Herbs, which contains organic cacao, kava kava and maqui berry. Kava kava has been used ceremonially for more than 3000 years in the Pacific Islands and is known to naturally help relax mind and body. I’ve found that it can help tremendously with sleeplessness on those nights that my mind just doesn’t want to shut off. Maqui berry adds a wonderful fruitiness to the chocolate syrup, giving it an almost chocolate covered cherry-like flavor.
I’ve created drinks with Mountain Rose Herbs elixirs before, and you can read more about why I choose to purchase from them over others suppliers here. You can learn about Mountain Rose Herbs and their commitment to put “people, plants, and planet over profit” here!
It doesn’t get much easier than warming some milk and herbal syrup together, and if you want, you can stop there and still have a very tasty beverage! I like to boost the calming vibes of my moon milk even more by adding some lavender bitters and a little rosewater. These floral flavors pair beautifully with the rich chocolate elixir and add a little something special. I have a very convenient automatic milk frother, so I love adding some thick foam to the top of my moon milk, but this is completely optional. You can also use a hand mixer to whip the entire drink and give it an even silkier texture.
Calming Chocolate Moon Milk
5 oz unsweetened almond milk (plus more for foam on top, if desired)
¼ tsp rosewater
2 dashes lavender bitters
In a small saucepan, gently heat all ingredients until warmed through, stirring frequently.
Meanwhile, froth a few ounces of almond milk until a thick foam is produced, if desired.
Pour contents of saucepan into a heat safe cup and top with frothed almond milk, if using. Garnish with an edible flower, dried edible rose petals, or a piece of chocolate.
